Nancy Stars as Coffee#1 Team Excel in Exeter

our coffee trainer Nancy Scott competed in the UK Barista Championships South West heats in Exeter on Thursday and came 3rd out of 18 competitors. She won a certificate and a trophy and fingers crossed her score will be enough to secure her a place at the finals to be held in London in June.
Liina Nutman also competed and came close behind Nancy in 4th place – all in all a great performance from the Coffee #1 team!

nancy1smallWe’re lucky at Coffee#1 in that coffee isn’t just our work – it’s also our passion and our hobby.

On Thursday our coffee trainer Nancy Scott became the latest Coffee#1 employee to put in a brilliant performance at competition level.

Competing in the UK Barista Championships South West in Exeter, Nancy came a magnificent third out of 18 competitors, winning a certificate and a trophy for her efforts.

With any luck, here score will be enough to secure her a place at the UK finals, to be held in London in June.

And not only that, but regular blog star Liina also competed and came in fourth, just one place behind her colleague.

All in all, a great performance from the Coffee#1 team. We’re very proud of you girls!

Liina’s Lattes Wow the Judges

art2dragCoffee#1 regulars should already be well aware of the lengths we go to ensure our coffee is the best tasting coffee anywhere.

But while we concentrate mainly on getting the substance right, we like to think our lattes have a bit of style too.

So we were delighted to see Coffee#1 being once again represented at the UK Latte Art Championships in Exeter by our Clevedon manager, Liina Nutman.

Competing against some experienced veterans of the competition, Liina turned out some fantastic rosettas as well as a superb dragon, her signature design (pictured left).

In the end she managed a very creditable sixth place. Well done Liina!

Some more photos of Liina doing her stuff at the event can be found on our Flickr page.

Fancy a Coffee in Wells? We’re Ready and Willing to Serve!

Coffee#1 Wells Exterior 3newWe’re delighted to announce that the new Coffee#1 store in beautiful Wells is now officially open.

It opened on Saturday – with a queue outside before we had even opened the doors and then packed all day after! Has been really busy since also – a great new store in a lovely city!

The early signs have been very encouraging – on our first day last week there was a queue outside before we had even opened the doors, and it stayed packed throughout the day. It’s been really busy ever since.

For a few pictures of the inside of the new store, take a look at our set on Flickr.

WiFi access: Why we don’t allow it at Coffee#1

One of the most frequent questions we get from customers online and offline relates to our in-store WiFi internet policy. We thought it was high-time we tried to explain our position.
To those who don’t know, WiFi internet access isn’t enabled in any Coffee#1 store. This in essence means that you can’t logon to the internet from your laptop or phone while sat at one of our tables.
For a company that is an enthusiastic supporter of social media, this may seem like a strange decision. And apart from anything else, it could well make financial sense for us to introduce wireless in-store and so attract the people who currently go elsewhere.
But we firmly believe our policy is both complementary with our support for social media and the right decision for Coffee#1 and our customers.
Let me outline our thinking.
Firstly, once you stop being a traditional coffee house and become a wired coffee house, you risk alienating the majority of people who have no interest in going online while having their coffee.
Studies have shown that people spend much longer at their tables, and in an independent chain like Coffee#1, that inevitably means less space for customers.
If you implement some kind of time limit for users, all you’re left with is a kind of unhappy compromise that nobody likes.
Our stores are generally busy anyway, and given the space we have available, a slower turnover of tables means that there will be more people unable to enjoy the Coffee#1 experience.
Secondly, as New York coffee houses have found, the atmosphere changes when you allow wireless access. Instead of popping in because of the quality of your coffee, more people pop in primarily because of the availability of your bandwidth.
The coffee house experience that we try so hard to foster, one that’s founded on creating not only the finest coffee but also the best surroundings and environment, would suffer. It’s reasonable to believe then that the community of passionate supporters that we’re lucky enough to have at Coffee#1 would not value us in the same way they do now.
We’ve always strived to do things differently at Coffee#1, but this isn’t just a case of us stubbornly going out on a limb. We want to continue growing Coffee#1 in the style our customers love, not change simply to fit in.
We’re not saying our policy will never change. But for the time being, we want to preserve Coffee#1 as the fantastic coffee house experience it is. We’d welcome your thoughts.

Our Ladies in Red Turn Out For Their Country

Rugby day in CardiffWith our Cardiff Central store only a drop-goal away from the Millennium Stadium, we couldn’t let last Saturday’s visit of the famous All Blacks pass without acknowledging the occasion in some way.

So here are Camilla Masters and store manageress Monika Janas proudly sporting their Wales shirts before the game… and we understand they even performed the Haka in honour of our esteemed visitors!

(Unfortunately our support didn’t quite work… the New Zealanders won 19-12!)

Coffee#1 v Starbucks: the winner is revealed…

We were extremely flattered to read the below review today on alt:Cardiff, who in the light of our recent award decided to test our credentials against one of our competitors.

We’re delighted to report that we seemed to come up trumps on all counts. The full review is below:

Who offers the better coffee experience? National winner versus Starbucks
Cardiff born coffee chain, Coffee#1 recently won the ‘Best beverage experience’ title. (BEV-E ’09) at the Beverage Service Association’s national awards.
Alt:cardiff reviewed a local Coffee#1 shop to see if it would still come up tops when compared to worldwide success Starbucks – which wasn’t part of the UK competition.
Beverage quality: Both tasty and piping hot. However, Starbuck’s coffee was larger and (marginally) cheaper.
Service: On leaving got a cheerful ‘goodbye’ from Coffee#1 staff. The Starbucks crew were too busy to notice.
Environment: Both were spacious and relaxing, however, Starbucks was a bit noisy and lacked Coffee#1’s local feel.  In terms of cleanliness, Starbucks felt neglected: deserted mugs and a clogged toilet.
So, who offered the better coffee experience? It’s clear: Coffee ‘won’.
