Soya vs Cows Milk

We live in a more health-conscious world and we decided it was time to get clued-up on milk.

Recently, we switched to organic milk in all our stores, because it’s higher in vitamins and antioxidants and doesn’t contain growth hormones that are often given to dairy cows.

But, at Coffee#1,we offer a choice of whole milk, skimmed (or ‘skinny’) milk and soya milk. Although somewhat of an acquired taste, in recent years, soya milk has become a popular milk-alternative for vegans and those with lactose intolerance.

Like cow’s milk, soya is high in protein and contains roughly the same amount of calories as semi-skimmed cow’s milk. It’s a good source of vitamins A, B and D, fibre, iron and potassium. It reduces cholesterol and the risk for osteoporosis and certain cancers. It also contains prebiotic sugars which boost immunity and help decrease toxic substances in the body.

However, soya contains only about a quarter of the calcium – which strengthens teeth and bones – that is contained in dairy milk.

Although soya contains a hormone, similar to oestrogen which can benefit women during the menopause, it can also cause hormone imbalance, and reduce testosterone levels, and thus fertility in men.

So either way – whether soya or from the cow itself – milk it an important part of healthy, balanced diet and there are lots of tasty ways to enjoy it with our selection of coffees, hot drinks and frappes!
