Happy Apple Day!

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the British festival ‘Apple Day’!

Apple Day was started by the charity Common Ground back in 1990 to celebrate and educate about the vast variety of apples we have in Britain. Due to the limited range found in supermarkets, many of these varieties have slipped under the radar in recent years.

The apple is used as a symbol, reminding us of the importance of protecting regional biodiversity and wildlife, encouraging us to re-establish traditions of locally grown produce, and regain our lost wisdom and relationship with the land.

Apple Day celebrations will be taking place all over Britain, bringing together communities in social and environmental activities, learning about nature and generally getting their hands sticky!

Head down to Boiling Wells, St. Werburghs, Bristol this Sunday 23rd Oct, where you can bring along your own apples for pressing. There’ll also be hot mulled cider, apple games, music and merriment!

The National Botanic Gardens of Wales is also holding a weekend-long Apple Day event where you can learn how to identify different varieties of apple and quiz the apple experts for advice so you can get growing and even start up a community orchard in your area!

Don’t forget, with the winter months coming up – “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, so drop into Coffee#1 for a nice warming mug of hot apple and cinnamon and a steaming slice of Granny’s apple pie!
