Reduce your Festive Footprint
In the few weeks leading up to the big day, it’s easy to get swept up in the hectic rush of Christmas shopping and preparations.
So this year, let’s slow down and be mindful of our impact of the planet over the festive period….
Using just a little imagination, and spending some time (instead of money), let’s rewrite a few traditions to create a conscious Christmas that’s not going to burn a hole in your pocket or the O-zone layer!
Here are a few tips from Coffee#1 on how to make your Christmas eco and ethical…
Decorations
Nature is our best teacher when it comes to decorating – go for a real tree from a local sustainable grower, and remember to either re-plant it afterwards or check out your council’s tree recycling programme.
Trim your home with sprigs of holly, ivy, mistletoe, and fir cones for a traditional rustic look. Get creative using any glitzy waste for decorations.
Wrapping
Try using ribbons or string to fasten your parcels rather than sticky tape. Make craft Christmas cards using cuttings from newspapers, flyers and paints and pens – it’s extra fun if you’ve got little helpers around to lend a hand. Otherwise keep an eye out for cards and gift wrap made from recycled paper in the shops.
Food & Drink
Aim for all things locally sourced, free range, organic and fair trade.
Energy
Instead of spending Christmas Day cooped up with the TV and heating on – arrange a walk with your friends and loved ones… it could be the first of your own memorable Christmas tradition that continues for years to come! And don’t forget to switch off your fairy lights when you leave the house!
Gifts
There are some great gadgets at nigelsecostore.com. But some of the greatest gift are not material… why not buy someone a membership to The National Trust, a year’s subscription to The Ecologist, or most charities these days offer ethical Christmas gifts so check out the site for your favoured cause.
Renew, Reuse Recycle
Be sure to use up or compost left-over food, recycle your rubbish, and take unwanted gifts to charity shops. Save cards, wrapping paper and decorations for next year. You can get clued up on where and how to recycle here recyclenow.com.
